Our Connacht Coaching Event Winners

As proud sponsors of Connacht Rugby, we recently held a unique competition where any team, from any sport, could win the opportunity to receive a customised coaching session with Head Coach of Connacht Rugby, Pat Lam and his backroom team.

The winners in the end were the Westmeath Senior Camogie team, who would take part in the one-of-a-kind event.

On the day, the world of rugby met the world of GAA as the team from Westmeath took over the Sportsground in Galway. The ladies got to hear from Pat on his coaching vision and they also got insights into how a professional analysis team prepare for competition.

Check out the video below to see just a snippet of how the ladies got on.

Huge thanks to Pat Lam and his team for providing a great day for the ladies.

We are delighted to be able to provide experiences like this so don’t forget to keep an eye out for more unique competitions on our FacebookTwitter and Instagram pages!

Robbie Henshaw talks Lions

Ireland and Leinster Rugby centre, Robbie Henshaw, was named as part of Warren Gatland’s 41-man Lions Squad last Wednesday so we sat down with the Athlone native to get his thoughts on being selected to wear the famous red jersey.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding season and was widely-expected to be included in the travelling party.

Last November, Henshaw famously scored a try against the All Blacks in Chicago which helped Ireland to claim a first ever win over New Zealand. Now he’ll be hoping to feature for the Lions against the World Cup holders in this summer’s hugely anticipated series.

So how did it feel hearing your name called out?

It was weird, a bit of a surprise. I was the first Leinster player to be called out so that was exciting. Lots of butterflies! It’s a massive honour, I suppose it’s the pinnacle of playing the sport.

Where were you when you found out?

I was actually in Leinster Rugby, we were all in the common room area with the team so we watched it together. It was nerve-wracking to be honest.

I had a call instantly from my Dad. We just had a quick chat and then it was straight back to training so we didn’t have much time to hang around on the phone!

Did you really only find out on the day?

Yeah, I swear! We all found out off the TV, it was crazy.

Have you any personal hopes for the Tour?

Just being included in the squad and being around the guys will hopefully improve me and bring me to the next level.

How would winning with Lions compare to winning the Six Nations or Pro12?

Winning with the Lions would be a step above, it’s huge. It’s the best contingent of players from the four countries so that will be massive, and to go and do it against the All Blacks would be better again.

So have you got a favourite ex-lions player?

There’s been so many to be honest, probably Jonny Wilkinson, I loved watching him when I was a kid. Keith Wood too, I remember him playing and he really was something else.

Who are you looking forward to getting to know while on Tour?

I’ve played against Jack Nowell and Anthony Watson (England) when I was younger, all the way up, so it would be cool to get to know them off the pitch.

Have you any thoughts on your fellow Irish players making the squad?

It’s great to have 11 guys in the squad and to have 5 from Leinster is class. It’s all on the back of hard work for the last few years so it’s great to see the lads get rewarded and I’m really looking forward to going on tour with them.

How do you usually spend your downtime while on Tour?

With Ireland, it’s funny, someone would have a coffee-chart on the wall and we would go out and test the best coffees around the city! Trust me, a lot of coffee is consumed while on Tour! We’d probably do some tourist-y stuff too. Like for instance, in South Africa, we went shark diving in cages, which was probably the best experience I’ve ever had in my life!

CONNACHT RUGBY SIGNS MAJOR SPONSORSHIP DEAL WITH ELVERYS INTERSPORT

Elverys Intersport, one of Ireland’s leading sports retailers with 58 stores nationwide, is to be the new title sponsor and official retail partner of Connacht Rugby. The new three-year deal will re-establish Elverys’ relationship with Connacht Rugby dating back to 2005.

Connacht of course had their most successful season ever in 2015/16 winning the GUINNESS PRO12 its first trophy in their proud 131 year history! That success was rewarded with a record seven Connacht players featuring on Ireland’s recent tour to South Africa.

Elverys, established in 1847, is Ireland’s oldest sports store, and today has 58 stores countrywide. Currently the company employ almost 800 people in Ireland. In 1995, Elverys became part of the Intersport group, one of Europe’s largest sporting goods buying groups. The Elverys brand remains true to its original roots, stocking products for a wide diversity of sports.

The new Connacht range for the upcoming season will feature the Elverys Intersport branding and will be launched in late July.

Speaking about the sponsorship Elverys Intersport Chief Executive Patrick Rowland highlighted that the opportunity to re-establish a relationship with Connacht was a perfect fit for Elverys:

‘’We believe that this is a great opportunity given our roots in the West of Ireland to launch a partnership with a local organisation who also have a significant national and international presence. Connacht Rugby mirror our ambition to be the best and most successful brand in each of our respective sectors.

Buying & Marketing Director of Elverys Intersport, Loman Caulfield (above) commented on the brand’s commitment to rugby in Connacht:

“Down through the years we have been involved with Connacht Rugby at all levels of the game throughout the province, having previously sponsored the professional team, the Connacht Schools Cup, the Connacht junior team, as well as a number of All Ireland League clubs. Our heart is in Connacht and this is well reflected in our backing of Connacht Rugby.”

In welcoming Elverys Intersport to the Connacht Rugby family Willie Ruane, CEO of the club said:

“Everyone at Connacht Rugby is delighted to welcome Elverys Intersport as our title sponsor and official retail partner in what is a very exciting time for the entire province. We believe Elverys Intersport share our strong commitment to our community and we look forward to working together and representing the real ambition and belief that is so very clearly part of Connacht as a people and a place.”
