Thinking of heading out this weekend for a run?

Whether you’re heading to your local parkrun or thinking of getting out for a long run this weekend here’s your guide for all things running.

As a runner or walker you know footwear selection is key, and having had your gait accessed in one of our stores you can be confident that the shoe you chose is right for you. Race day is the perfect opportunity to lace up the lighter shoes in your wardrobe if you are looking to push the pace and set a new PB. And if you are taking part for the sheer fun of it run, jog or walk in the shoes you are most comfortable in.

Once you are comfortable and confident in your footwear it’s time to choose your running gear. Think lightweight and breathable as exam weather has brought out the sun! General running rule is that if you are warm walking in your running gear you may be wearing too much. Just keep this in mind, you don’t want to reach 3 kilometres into your run and have to rethink your outfit. Also while you’re out there please spare a thought for those indoor studying.

Be sure to wake up early the day of the run and start your out with a light stretch. Once you get to the track, park or where ever you are running spend 10-15 minutes warming up utilising mostly dynamic stretches with a few static stretches where needed. If your muscles are very tight from your last run or work out break out the foam roller and roll those muscle knots out.

It’s generally recommended to eat two hours before a run but this will differ from person to person, so this is something to think about before the day before the run. You won’t want to try something new nutrition wise, especially if you’re racing! Stick to what works for you. Finally ensure you’re keeping yourself hydrated before, during and especially after your run to avoid cramps or fatigue in the exam weather heat.

As Associated sponsors of the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon and parkrun our staff are experts on all things running and are on hand to answer any question you may have during you next visit in store.

Happy running!

They are what make the championships. It’s a beautiful contradiction and one that each of our films will celebrate differently.

All Ireland legends who go on to train their greatest adversaries, family but intercounty rivals, friends yet fierce competitors. These are stories that capture the essence of GAA, told with energy, commitment and absolute passion.

NBA FINALS 2018 – A SHOWDOWN OF SUPERSTARS

The NBA Finals is as thrilling a spectacle as it has ever been, with the superstar talent on show. It’s the first time in history that two teams have competed in the Finals for four consecutive years, two Goliaths of sports teams; the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. These respective teams and their players have spent a lifetime striving to be among the elite few who capture a coveted NBA Champions ring.

The apex of talent culminates in the most entertaining performances that sport has to offer.

Expertise as awe-inspiring as Lebron James on the Cavs; lighting up the fiercest competition with 51 individual points in Game 1 despite receiving a punch that leaves his eye a deep, glowing red in the early minutes of the game. There is just no quitting for an athlete that makes his ninth appearance to the Finals, and eight of those in consecutive years.

The Golden State Warriors have been the powerhouse of diverse talent in the league, and has won two of the last three Finals against the Cavaliers. The record breaking scorer Stephen Curry in Game 2 set the record of most 3-pointers in a Finals game with 9 in their win, and the series comes to be 2-0 in the Warriors favour. The Hall of Fame worthy performance was no fluke as Curry holds the regular season record for made 3-pointers, an incredible athlete that has fans on the edge of their seats as he eyes up a shot from the outside.

Cleveland, although behind in the two opening games of the seven game series, is at their best when playing on their home turf with a dominating 8-1 record in the postseason. The Warriors should feel far from comfortable tonight when they play Game 3 in Cleveland, as they do not have the luxury of being caught napping after their 19-point win in Game 2. The Cavaliers forced the Warriors into an overtime showdown in Game 1 that proves they are a force to be reckoned with.

Share our enthusiasm for the showdown of the superstars by wearing a jersey you could be proud of. Experience the intensity of the Finals in solidarity with the greatest by getting your very own superstar’s jersey.

ASICS, ADIDAS AND BROOKS – THE BEST JUST GOT BETTER

The world of running just got particularly exciting with the release of new running shoes from world renowned brands Asics, Adidas and Brooks. The new products are perfect for all, from the dedicated trail warriors to those picking up their first pair to get fit for their beach holidays. Intersport Elverys has stocked the best in top quality running shoes to make running an enjoyable, invigorating way to experience the summer.

Asics GEL-Kayano 25

Our first look at the new releases is the Asics GEL-Kayano 25.

A running shoe designed with the longevity of running life in mind, it is designed to counteract the calf-strain caused by the low-arch foot, and propel your stride forward with FLYTEFOAM® LYTE TECHONOLOGY. The design focuses on the well-being of the runner as well as providing maximum bounce back on each step. This shoe attains both maximal efficiency and support that will keep you robust on your most vigorous runs.

Brooks Glycerin 16

Next, we look at the Brooks Glycerin 16 with DNA LOFT engineering, the soles of your feet will get the most luxurious comfort that any shoe can offer.

Running has never been made more exhilarating than when atop the clouds. The upper is composed of 3D Fit Print mesh that maintains a comfortable hug on your feet. The mesh flexes with the movement of your muscles to prevent the foot sores of rigid fitting running shoes, and is highly breathable adding unmatched comfort to the whole foot. With these shoes on, being active will rapidly become a habit, and a run the most satisfying part of your day.

Adidas SolarBoost

Finally, we see the Adidas SolarBoost with its Tailored Fiber Placement that precisely stitches every millimeter to achieve an incredibly lightweight shoe.

The loss of weight works perfectly with the smooth, forward propulsion of the sole, and offers great protection from the stress on your joints that paved surfaces can cause. A versatile and extraordinarily lightweight running shoe is ideal for the best sprint times, and for the long distance runs that will make any ultra-runner appreciate every gram that this shoe leaves off.

Ireland Mens Sevens Team, Bronze Medal Winners in London

For those of you who don’t know what Rugby Sevens is, it’s a seven-a-side version of Rugby Union in which teams are made up of seven players playing seven minute halves, as opposed to the usual 15 players playing 40 minute halves. As a sport, it has seen a lot of growth over the last few years and is now an official Olympic sport.

The game is popular at all levels, with amateur and club tournaments mostly held during the summer. Ireland are represented by both a men’s and women’s team, and they will both travel to San Francisco for the World Cup at the end of July for the competition which will be held at AT&T Park, the home of MLB Franchise The San Francisco Giants.  Intersport Elverys have been proud title sponsors of the Mens and Women’s Irish Rugby Sevens Teams since 2016.

Ireland’s continued rise and growth in the Rugby Sevens world continued unabated at the weekend as they came third in their very first HSBC World Rugby Sevens appearance. Playing at the home of English rugby Twickenham Stadium, they just made it through the group stage but Ireland shocked the USA and England in the knockout stage to secure a bronze medal. That was a massive achievement, especially when you consider that those two teams were much fancied by many to make the final of the tournament. To cap off a wonderful weekend for the Irish team, Jordan Conroy and Mark Roche made it onto the HSBC London Dream team of the tournament. Anthony Eddy’s men have a second chance to gain top tier experience as the invitational team for the final World Series tournament of the 2017/18 season in Paris this coming weekend.

The team is overseen by IRFU Director of Sevens Anthony Eddy, IRFU Sevens coach Stan McDowell and team manager James Topping. It is worth noting that the majority of Ireland’s 13-man London squad were aged between 20 and 23, hopefully pointing to a bright future for the IRFU Men’s Sevens Programme. Next year Ireland will have the chance to secure core team status on the series at the Hong Kong qualifying tournament. Here’s hoping!

Here are the results from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens London held at Twickenham Stadium:

Saturday, June 2 –

Pool B:  Australia 33-7 Ireland,    Spain 10-38 Ireland,         Wales 21-19 Ireland.

Sunday, June 3

Cup Quarter-Final: USA 12-22 Ireland,        Cup Semi-Final: Fiji 38-12 Ireland,          Bronze Final: Ireland 21-19 England.

Intersport Elverys are the proud official sports retail partner of Ireland’s rugby 7s teams.
