Looking Ahead To The Rugby In 2019

With rugby behind us for 2018, all roads lead to 2019 and there is so much to look forward to. Connacht Rugby are having somewhat of a resurgent campaign, the Irish rugby team had a phenomenal year in 2018 and have their sights set on the 6 nations and the World Cup and the Irish Rugby 7’s teams are also improving all the time. 2019 is shaping up to be a cracker!

As the title sponsor of Connacht Rugby, here at Intersport Elverys we’re delighted to see the team performing so well under the stewardship of Andy Friend. Connacht are currently sitting in 3rd place in Conference A of the Guinness PRO14 and are in second place in their Challenge Cup Pool. They will be hoping to continue their fantastic league form over Christmas and into the new year. Their goal will be to secure a Champions Cup place for next season and hopefully have a crack at the PRO14 title. In Europe, if they win their final two games, they will almost be guaranteed a place in the knockout stages. If Connacht can continue their good run of form, 2019 could be hugely successful year. Everyone at Intersport Elverys Towers are really looking forward to seeing what will unfold! Shop Connacht Rugby HERE.

6 Nations

2018 was one of the most successful years ever for the Irish Rugby team after winning the Grand Slam, beating Australia in the Tour Down under and finally beating the All Blacks at home, for the first time ever. 2019 starts with Ireland trying to defend their 6 Nations title. Their campaign kicks off at home against the old enemy England at the Aviva Stadium on the 2nd of February, the result of which will most likely shape how the rest of the campaign pans out. The team will have to play 3 away games against Scotland, Italy and the last game of the competition against Wales (hopefully a grand slam decider) as well as a home game against France. Ireland will go into the 6 Nations as the favorites, but with the World Cup just a few months further down the road, Joe Schmidt could use this tournament of somewhat of a building block for the World Cup. Time will tell, but this Ireland team is so hard to beat, so as official sports retail partner of the IRFU and genuine followers of the team, we hope they can reclaim the Grand Slam. Shop IRFU HERE.

World Cup

Everything in the 2019 Rugby world is gearing towards to Rugby World Cup in Japan. Everyone knows that the All Blacks are the number one ranked team in the world and are aiming to win their 3rd World Cup on the bounce. All the big teams know that if they are going to win the World Cup, there is a high possibility that they will have to overcome New Zealand to capture the Web Ellis Cup. South Africa, Australia, Ireland, Wales and England will be leading the chase to dethrone the World Champions. Of course, we are really looking forward to Ireland’s journey. After beating New Zealand twice in the last couple of years, people are really starting to believe that Ireland can finally get to a World Cup Semi Final and ultimately go on and become Champions of the World. We are starting to dream! Shop All Blacks HERE.

Rugby Sevens

As title sponsor of the Irish Rugby 7s teams, it’s fantastic to see the Women’s and Men’s teams going from strength to strength. The Women’s team are part of the World Rugby Sevens series and this has meant that they play high quality opponents consistently throughout the year. They played well all year and will be hoping 2019 will see even more improvements. The men’s team were not in the World Rugby Sevens series in 2018, but will be hoping the qualify this year through the Hong Kong Sevens tournament. They did perform admirably when they got invited to some of the World Rugby Sevens Series events. The Rugby World Cup Sevens was held in San Francisco in 2018 and it was hugely successful for Ireland. The men’s team captured the Challenge trophy (9th place) by beating Australia in the final, while the women’s team finished in a brilliant 6th place. Both teams are building nicely, and the future looks very bright indeed. Shop IRFU Rugbys Sevens HERE.
