Wimbledon 2018 … The Likely Contenders
With Wimbledon 2018 kicking off on July 2nd, we decided to take a look at previous stars of the tournament and who’s looking like likley contenders.
Men’s Likely Heroes
Last year saw the evergreen Roger Federer reaching his eight Wimbledon title at the tender age of 35. This reemergence of the Swiss maestro, along with Novak Djokovic’s recent troubles. (He announced the departure of coach Radek Stepanek, thus continuing a bruising few weeks that must count as the one of the more demoralising periods in his career) puts Federer in a strong position going into the summer.
Djokovic’s drop in form has also heralded the departure of Andre Agassi. This means that the 12-time slam champion has scratched his whole support team for the second time in less than a year. It doesn’t appear to bode well for his Wimbledon contender status. Djokovic is now ranked No13 in the world, so from the outside, it appears that challengers Federer & Nadal will battle it out for top honours.
As for Rafa Nadal, he seems to be coming into form, and at the Miami Open, we saw Federer losing his No1 ranking to the Spaniard.
However, with all of them now the other side of 30, the question is will they be able to hang on to their form or where the next big star will come from this year?
Women’s Side Of Things
For the Women, the focus seems to be back on Venus Williams, the seven time Grand Slam champion, who has shown she is more than up for the challenge. Whereas Serena’s Return from time out to the WPA has not gone too smoothly having lost 6-2 6-3 to Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs in the Fed’s Cup on Feb 11. Denis Schuurs having peaked to No. 31 in doubles Ranking on Jan 2018.
But the way the WPA is going will Caroline Wozniacki retain her No1 rank after winning her first Grand Slam title on Jan 2018 at the Australian Open ?
Who do you think will be a contender this year?
